Under Paragraph 68-J of the EPF Scheme, there is zero minimum service requirement for a medical advance. Unlike withdrawals for housing or education (which require 5 to 7 years of continuous service), you are legally eligible to apply for a Form 31 medical advance immediately, regardless of whether you have been contributing for 10 years or just a few months.

You are legally permitted to withdraw EPF funds for the medical treatment of your dependent parents, your spouse, your dependent children, or yourself. However, the statutory rules do not extend this benefit to parents-in-law. To claim for parents-in-law, your spouse would need to apply through their own separate EPF account.

No. Under the updated 2026 EPFO paperless framework, medical certificates, doctor's prescriptions, and hospital estimates are no longer required for Form 31 medical claims. The process now operates entirely on a Self-Declaration basis. Members simply select the "Illness" purpose on the portal and accept the online undertaking. The only document you must upload is a clear PDF scan of your cancelled cheque or bank-attested passbook for account verification.

The maximum medical advance you can withdraw is calculated as the lowest of the following two amounts: Six months of your basic wages plus Dearness Allowance (DA). Your own share of contributions (the Employee Share) plus accrued interest. Important 2026 Compliance Note: Regardless of the above calculation, the new 2026 framework mandates a 25% retention floor. At least 25% of your total accumulated EPF corpus must remain in the account to protect your retirement savings.

According to the statutory provisions of the Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, an advance is permissible for three main medical scenarios: Hospitalization lasting for one month or more. Major surgical operations conducted in a hospital. Treatment for specific critical ailments, explicitly including Tuberculosis (TB), Leprosy, Paralysis, Cancer, Mental derangement, or Heart ailments.

Under Paragraph 68-K of the EPF Scheme, a member must have completed a minimum of 7 years of membership in the EPF to be eligible for an advance for either marriage or post-matriculation education.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. You are fully eligible to claim a Form 31 advance for your own post-matriculation (higher) education. This statutory provision covers the education expenses for the member, as well as for their son or daughter.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. Paragraph 68-K explicitly permits EPF members to withdraw funds to meet the marriage expenses of their dependent brother or sister. This is in addition to covering the marriage of the member themselves, or their son or daughter.

A member is legally permitted to claim an advance under Para 68-K for marriage or education for a maximum of three times during their entire EPF service duration.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
The maximum allowable withdrawal for marriage or education is strictly capped at 50% of the employee’s own share of contributions, including the accrued interest on that specific share. You cannot withdraw from the employer's contribution portion for this category.

There is a distinct service threshold for each: Under Paragraph 68-B (Purchasing a house, flat, or construction), you need a minimum of 5 years of service. However, under Paragraph 68-BB (Repayment of an outstanding housing loan), you must have completed 10 years of EPF membership.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. According to EPFO guidelines, it is not mandatory for the property to be in the member's name alone. The property or the housing loan can be held in the name of the EPF member, the spouse, or jointly in both of their names.

To process a Para 68-BB withdrawal, you must upload a Certificate from the lending agency (Bank/HFC). This document must explicitly state the outstanding principal and interest amount, along with the specific loan account number and IFSC code, as the EPFO will credit the advance directly to the loan account, not your personal savings account.

Yes. You can withdraw funds for purchasing a dwelling site (vacant plot). The maximum limit for a plot purchase is up to 24 months of your basic wages plus DA, or the actual cost of the plot, or the total EPF accumulation (both shares), whichever is the least.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. Unlike medical or education advances which restrict you to your own share, housing-related withdrawals under Para 68-B allow you to utilize both the employee's and the employer's share (excluding the EPS pension portion). The combined limit for house construction or purchase goes up to 36 months of basic wages and DA.

Under the provisions of Paragraph 68-NN (commonly referred to as the Age 54 Rule), an active EPF member becomes eligible to withdraw up to 90% of their total accumulated corpus at any time after attaining the age of 54 years, or within one year before their actual retirement on superannuation, whichever comes first.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. Unlike illness or education advances that restrict you to only your own contributions, the Para 68-NN pre-retirement advance allows you to withdraw up to 90% of your total EPF accumulation. This includes both your employee share and the employer's share, along with all accrued interest on both portions.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
No. The standard 25% retention floor is superseded by the specific provisions of Para 68-NN. Because this advance is explicitly designed as a pre-retirement transition benefit, the statute legally authorizes a withdrawal of up to 90%, leaving only a 10% balance to be settled upon your final retirement.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
Yes. Taking a Para 68-NN advance does not close your EPF account or terminate your membership. You can continue working in your current employment, and both you and your employer will simply continue making regular monthly PF contributions on your wages until your actual retirement date.

As of the latest EPFO administrative reforms, the maximum claim ceiling eligible for the AI-driven auto-settlement system has been increased to ₹5 Lakh (up from the previous ₹1 Lakh limit). Advance claims below this amount bypass human approval, while claims exceeding ₹5 Lakh are automatically routed to the regional office for manual processing.
Need personal assistance on this issue?
When a Form 31 claim successfully qualifies for the auto-settlement lane, the EPFO's automated engine processes, approves, and dispatches the funds directly to the member's registered bank account within 3 working days (72 hours).
Need personal assistance on this issue?
To trigger the 72-hour auto-settlement, your UAN must be completely Aadhaar-seeded, your bank account KYC must be digitally verified by your employer, and your demographic data (Name, Date of Birth, Gender) must perfectly match across your UAN profile, your Aadhaar database, and your banking records.

Claims instantly drop out of the auto-settlement queue and revert to manual scrutiny (which can take up to 20 days) if the automated system detects any discrepancies. Common triggers include a single-letter name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank account, missing IFSC codes, unverified KYC, or requesting a withdrawal amount that exceeds the ₹5 Lakh auto-processing ceiling.
