Statutory Wage Ceiling Transition: Pre vs Post 2026 Rules
Under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, establishing mandatory statutory ceilings determines coverage and contributions for millions of Indian workers.
Ministry of Labour Notification S.O. 5109(E) • Dual Timeline Rule
Effective 17 Sept 2026The statutory wage ceiling increases from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 strictly with effect from 17 September 2026. Applying the ₹25,000 limit retroactively to past service is legally invalid. This transition engine automatically segregates your EPF tenure into Period A (Historical ₹15k) and Period B (Revised ₹25k), computing continuous monthly compounding interest without wiping historical earnings.
Enacted on 1 September 2014, the ₹15,000 ceiling capped monthly employer EPS contributions at ₹1,250. Contributions prior to 17 Sept 2026 strictly respect this ceiling.
Effective 17 September 2026, the ceiling expands to ₹25,000 per month. The 8.33% EPS pension allocation rises to ₹2,083.25/month, while higher contributions compound inside EPF.
EPFO calculates interest monthly on running balances (8.25% p.a.). The transition seamlessly preserves your pre-transition accumulated corpus and compounds it forward.
How S.O. 5109(E) Affects Employer EPS Diversion
Under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) 1995, employer contributions are bifurcated between the Provident Fund and Pension Scheme. Prior to the Gazette notification, the 8.33% EPS contribution was capped at ₹1,250 per month based on the ₹15,000 ceiling. Under S.O. 5109(E), the enhanced ₹25,000 ceiling raises the maximum statutory EPS diversion to ₹2,083.25 per month. Any employer contribution exceeding this cap is credited directly to the member's EPF account, resulting in significantly higher monthly compound growth.
Para 26(6) Joint Declaration Comparison
While statutory capping limits employee and employer EPF deductions to either ₹15,000 or ₹25,000, Paragraph 26(6) of the EPF Scheme 1952 permits employees and employers to submit a joint declaration to contribute 12% on the full, un-capped basic pay plus dearness allowance. This calculator projects both the standard statutory timeline and the voluntary Para 26(6) full-wage model side-by-side to highlight the compounding wealth difference.
