How to Reset or Change Your EPFO UAN Password (Even If You Forgot It)

Published: Oct 24, 2026 • Reviewed by Senior Compliance Retainer Panel

Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is the master key to your retirement savings. Whether you need to check your EPF balance, update your KYC, or file an online withdrawal claim, you need a secure and active password to access the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Unified Member Portal.

However, login issues are incredibly common. Under the latest EPFO 3.0 security upgrades, the portal no longer relies on your old "EPFO-registered" mobile number. Instead, all password resets are now strictly authenticated through the UIDAI (Aadhaar) database. Here is the complete, updated guide to getting back into your account in 2026.

EPFO Password Requirements (Read Before You Start)

The EPFO portal has strict password validation rules. Before you initiate a reset, prepare a new password that meets all of the following criteria, otherwise the portal will reject it:

  • Must be a minimum of 7 characters and a maximum of 20 characters long.
  • Must contain at least one uppercase letter (A-Z).
  • Must contain at least one lowercase letter (a-z).
  • Must contain at least one number (0-9).
  • Must contain at least one special character (e.g., @, #, $, %, &, *).

Scenario 1: How to Change Your Password (If You Know Your Current Login)

If you can successfully log in but want to update your password for security reasons (or because the portal is prompting you to change an expired password), follow these steps:

  1. Log into the EPFO Unified Member Portal using your UAN and current password.
  2. Navigate to the top menu bar, click on Account, and select Change Password.
  3. Enter your Old Password in the first field.
  4. Enter your New Password and type it again in the Confirm New Password field.
  5. Check the consent box to allow Aadhaar-based authentication.
  6. Click Get Aadhaar OTP. (Note: To enhance security, EPFO now requires an Aadhaar OTP even for routine password changes from inside the portal.)
  7. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and click Submit. Your password is now updated.

Scenario 2: How to Reset Your Password (If You Forgot It or Lost Your Old Number)

You no longer need access to the original mobile number you used when you first joined the company. As long as your current mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar card, the EPFO system will allow you to reset your password.

  1. Visit the EPFO Member Portal login page and click the Forgot Password link located below the Sign-In button.
  2. Enter your 12-digit UAN and the CAPTCHA code, then click Submit.
  3. Demographic Verification: The screen will prompt you to verify your identity. Enter your Name, Date of Birth, and Gender exactly as they appear on your Aadhaar card. Click Verify.
  4. Aadhaar Verification: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar Number and the new CAPTCHA code, check the consent box, and click Verify.
  5. Mobile Verification: The system will now ask for your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter the mobile number currently active on your phone (it must match the UIDAI database) and click Get OTP.
  6. Input the OTP received on your phone and click Verify.
  7. You will now see fields to enter and confirm your New Password. Click Submit to finalize the reset.

Corporate Compliance Helpdesk

Is your password reset failing because your Name or Date of Birth doesn't match your Aadhaar?

If your demographic details in the EPFO database contain typos or old information, the Aadhaar verification step (Step 3 & 4) will fail, permanently blocking your password reset attempts. This requires a formal Joint Declaration submission by your employer to synchronize your EPF records with your Aadhaar.

At CorporateCompliance.in, we help employees and HR departments resolve complex KYC mismatches, unblock locked UANs, and streamline EPF withdrawals. Contact our compliance experts today to regain access to your provident fund account.
